Pond
Anderson Pond
Anderson Pond is one of the most visited areas of the Park and for good reason. Part of the Olmsted brothers’ original design for the Park, the pond served as a landscape feature as well as a working pond. Prior to the introduction of refrigerators, the Laphams retrieved ice from the pond for storage in an ice house during winter.
Over the years, the pond edges and stone spillways deteriorated while a variety of invasive species took over the immediate perimeter. In 2021, the Conservancy successfully completed a major pond restoration project with the generous support of the Anderson Foundation and the Town of New Canaan. The pond now offers a spectacular view from the formal gardens below the main house, and offers a peaceful destination just a short stroll down the lawns or through the woods.
There are several benches to sit and contemplate the thriving aquatic wildlife while picnics on the grass above the pond are popular on sunny days.
Look out for tadpoles, frogs, mallards and other wildlife!
